There are many breeds of Sheep, but they are generally sub classable such as: wool class, hair class, and sheep meat breeds. The domestic sheep is the most common species of Sheep Genus. There are many different theories supporting the origins of the woolly quadrupeds, but most sources agree they came from Mouflon.
Female sheep are known as ewes, intact males as rams. Castrated males are wethers, yearlings are hoggets and younger sheep are known as lambs.
Despite myth, sheep are actually extremely intelligent. Scientist have proven that sheep can remember 50 faces for up to two years, and they also feel emotion when a familiar face is in front of them. That can't be nice if the familiar face is there to slaughter you.
Isn't this a wonderful sight? The first sign that Spring has sprung. All the little white fluffy lambs (and some black of course) jumping around, playing, suckling their mother. And if you drive passed a field in the Spring, you can just see so many of them. Why so many? The mother's didn't have them by choice. In fact, almost all those lambs you see would be there through AI (Artificial Insemination).

When the farmer feels that the lamb is ready they are taken to the slaughter house in cramped dirty lorries. There, they are herded into pens, ready to be stunned using a 'Captive Bolt Pistol'.If a human walked into a slaughter house they would instantly wretch from the smell of blood and death. What makes you think it is any different for sheep? You think they can't smell blood? Or sense the danger? They do, because at this point they begin to show signs of distress. In the larger slaughter houses they use a conveyor belt method, so that they are completely restrained as they approach the stun operator. No one can really answer the question as to whether or not stunning is effective. Even if it does work, 5 million sheep regained consciousness last year, resulted in them having their throats cut while the were still alive.

The sheep, once dead are left to bleed for 20 seconds, although these pictures are taken outdoors, these were just a demonstration as to what really happens inside to hundreds of sheep in one go. The sheep are then dragged to the next room, and hung on the wall.
