Help Save Lives

On August 8th 1970, a pod of around 80 Orca members swam off the coast of Whidbey Island in Washington State, USA. Poachers, using speedboats and explosives forced the pod into a cove where they had no escape. Four juvenile Orcas were trapped beneath the others and suffocated before they could reach the surface. This fact had tried to be concealed from the media by the poachers as a few months later, the missing Orcas washed ashore. Their bellies had been cut open and stuffed full of rocks, and anchors had been attached to their tails in order to weigh them down.
Seven of the pod were captured and sold to aquariums all over the world including Japan and Australia. They all died within 5 years.

All except Lolita, she is the only survivor of the captive Orcas. Her family still roam the seas in freedom and there is no doubt that Lolita will remember them, and they will remember that fateful time when the pod was destroyed.

Lolita is forced to perform tricks for the paying public, her intelligence ridiculed as she throws balls around the tiny, chlorinated enclosure she is kept in. And when the public go home, then what happens?
She is left alone, to swim around in circles. Her tank is 28ft by 68ft, the size of an average hotel swimming pool, and she is in the oldest and smallest tank in the US.

If Lolita is freed now, there is a chance she may not survive. She does not have her killer instinct and introducing her back into the unknown ocean may be difficult, however, the longer Lolita stays where she is, the more she is dying. So Lets Save Lolita!

Signing the petition below will help us to persuade Miami Seaaqurium to transfer her to an enclosed section of the sea, that way she will be returned to her origins, allowed to swim freely, but still protected, at least until she can survive on her own. When she has been properly evaluated, she may be returned to the ocean!
